Refeeding syndrome can happen to anyone who is moving from a malnourished state into more of a nourished state. It is a severe medical complication of the metabolism as it adjusts to eating again. We see this of course in the world of consequences of eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, but also in situations arising from cancer, chemotherapy, chronic alcohol abuse, and other malabsorption disorders. It might not be able to be prevented in every situation, but there are certain indicators to look out for to help prevent it from happening, as well as what to look for as far as symptoms.
